Types of Schools in Valencia

Valencia offers three main types of schools. The right choice depends on your family's language goals, budget, and how long you plan to stay.

public

International Schools

British, American, French, or German curriculum. Taught primarily in English (or the relevant language). Higher fees (€4,000–€12,000/year) but seamless transition for expat children.

Examples: British School of Valencia, Caxton College, American School of Valencia

school

Concertado (Semi-Private)

Government-funded but privately managed. Often Catholic. Bilingual (Spanish + Valenciano). Low fees (€100–€300/month). Popular with Spanish families. Good immersion option.

Examples: Pureza de María, Escuelas San José, Juan XXIII

Public Schools (Colegio Público)

Free. Taught in Spanish and Valenciano. Excellent standard in Valencia. Full immersion — ideal for younger children who will pick up the language quickly.

Examples: CEIP Benimaclet, CEIP Campanar, CEIP Max Aub

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start the school enrollment process?expand_more
For international schools, applications are accepted year-round but popular schools fill up fast — start 6–12 months before your move. For public and concertado schools, the enrollment window (matriculación) opens in late March for the following September. Starting research in October gives you the best options.
Do my children need to speak Spanish to attend a public school?expand_more
No. Children under 10 typically pick up Spanish within 3–6 months of immersion. Many public schools in Valencia have aulas de acogida (welcome classrooms) with extra language support for newcomers. Older children (12+) may benefit from starting at an international school.
What is homologación and do I need it?expand_more
Homologación is the official recognition of foreign academic qualifications by the Spanish Ministry of Education. It is required for children entering ESO (secondary) or Bachillerato. We handle the entire process, including document translation and submission.
Can you help with mid-year enrollment?expand_more
Yes. Public schools must accept children at any point during the school year (by law). International and concertado schools often have places available mid-year too. We can fast-track the process for families arriving outside the standard September start.
