Why Valencia Beats the Costa del Sol for Retirement
The Costa del Sol has name recognition, but Valencia offers a better quality of life for retirees who want more than sunshine and golf.
World-Class Healthcare
Hospital La Fe is one of Europe's top-ranked public hospitals. Valencia has 6 major hospitals, plus a dense network of private clinics accepting Sanitas and Adeslas.
Real International Airport
Direct flights to 100+ destinations including London, Amsterdam, Paris, and New York (seasonal). 20 minutes from the city centre by metro.
Culture & Social Life
Opera house (Palau de les Arts), museums, universities, and a thriving food scene. You won't run out of things to do — unlike smaller coastal towns.
Public Transport
Metro, tram, and bus network means you don't need a car. Flat terrain is perfect for walking and cycling. Monthly pass just €40.
Non-Lucrative Visa for Retirees
The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is the standard route for non-EU retirees moving to Spain. It does not permit you to work — making it ideal for those living on pensions and savings.
NLV Application Checklist
Healthcare for Retirees
Spain's healthcare system is ranked among the best in the world. As a retiree, you have two paths.
Public Healthcare (Seguridad Social)
Not immediately available on an NLV. After obtaining permanent residency (5 years), you can apply for a SIP card and access free public healthcare. UK retirees with an S1 form can access public care from day one.
Private Healthcare
Required for the NLV application. Sanitas and Adeslas are the most popular among expats. Premiums for over-65s range from €150–€300/month. Shorter waiting times, English-speaking doctors, and access to top private hospitals.

Tax Implications for Retirees
Becoming a Spanish tax resident has consequences. Here is what retirees need to know.
Key Points
Beckham Law — Not for Retirees
The Beckham Law (24% flat rate) is only available to employed or self-employed individuals who move to Spain for work. Retirees on an NLV do not qualify.
IRPF — Progressive Income Tax
Pension income is taxed under Spain's standard IRPF brackets (19%–47%). Your worldwide income is taxable once you spend 183+ days/year in Spain.
Double Taxation Treaties
Spain has treaties with most countries to avoid being taxed twice. UK State Pension is only taxable in Spain (not the UK) once you are Spanish tax resident.
Modelo 720 — Foreign Assets
If you hold overseas assets worth more than €50,000 in any category (bank accounts, investments, property), you must declare them annually by March 31.
