Valencia's oldest surviving theatre, an Italian-style hall on Carrer de les Barques that opened in 1832 and is closed for a major refurbishment.
The Teatre Principal is the grande dame of Valencia's stages. Opened in 1832 on Carrer de les Barques, a couple of streets from Plaza del Ayuntamiento, it is the city's oldest surviving theatre and a flagship venue of the Institut Valencia de Cultura, the regional government's arts body. It is currently closed: in September 2026 the Diputacio de Valencia shut it for a comprehensive refurbishment.

About the venue
The Principal's story stretches back to 1774, when Italian architect Filippo Fontana drew the first plans. Construction dragged on for decades: the theatre finally opened in 1832, and the sober facade you see on Carrer de les Barques was not completed until 1854.
Until its closure it anchored the city's public theatre season, programmed by the Institut Valencia de Cultura: large-scale drama, touring Spanish companies, dance and the occasional lyric production. For 2026-2027 the IVC has moved its programme to the Teatre MartÃn i Soler at the Palau de les Arts, the Teatre Rialto and the Teatre el Musical.
It has also doubled as a festival house. Cinema Jove, Valencia's international film festival for filmmakers under 40, held its opening and closing galas at the Principal in June 2025 - one of the few chances to watch a film inside a 19th-century Italian-style hall. Tips for your visit
- Check the language. When the Principal reopens, expect most productions in Spanish or Valencian, so check the listing before booking. Dance nights need no translation.
- Choose your seat carefully. Once it reopens, stalls and central boxes have the best sightlines, while the cheaper upper galleries are steep with partial views. Book ahead for premieres and weekends.
- Make an evening of it elsewhere for now. Until it reopens, the shows programmed for the Principal are staged at the Teatre MartÃn i Soler, the Teatre Rialto and the Teatre el Musical. Afterwards, Plaça de l'Ajuntament will again be two minutes away for dinner, with Xà tiva metro and night buses right around the corner.
