The Teatre Principal is the grande dame of Valencia's stages. Opened in 1832 on Carrer de les Barques, a couple of streets from Plaza del Ayuntamiento, it is the city's oldest working theatre and one of the flagship venues of the Institut Valencia de Cultura, the regional government's arts body.

About the venue
The Principal's story stretches back to 1774, when Italian architect Filippo Fontana drew the first plans. Construction dragged on for decades: the theatre finally opened in 1832, and the sober facade you see on Carrer de les Barques was not completed until 1854.
Today it is run by the Institut Valencia de Cultura and anchors the city's public theatre season: large-scale drama, touring Spanish companies, dance and the occasional lyric production all pass through its stage.
It also moonlights as a festival house. Every June, Cinema Jove, Valencia's international film festival for young filmmakers, takes over the Principal for screenings and galas - one of the few chances to watch a film inside a 19th-century Italian-style hall.
Tips for your visit
Most productions are in Spanish or Valencian, so check the show's language before booking if that matters to you - though dance nights need no translation.
In a horseshoe hall, where you sit changes everything: stalls and central boxes have the best sightlines, while the cheapest upper galleries are steep with partial views. Book ahead for premieres and weekend dates.
You are two minutes from Plaza del Ayuntamiento, so dinner beforehand is easy, and the Xativa metro stop and night buses are right around the corner for getting home.
