Why learn Spanish in Valencia

Valencia gives you faster progress per euro than Madrid or Barcelona. Rents are lower, locals still chat in queues, and immersion happens in your barrio bakery, not in a classroom.

Bilingual city, Spanish first

Spanish (Castellano) is the everyday street language. Valenciano appears on signs and in some schools, but you do not need it to learn or live here.

Strong international student scene

Two large public universities, Erasmus inflows, and digital nomads create a built-in language-exchange community across Ruzafa, Benimaclet and El Carmen.

Lower cost than Madrid or Barcelona

Rooms from 450 EUR, intensive courses from 150 EUR per week. A full month of immersion costs about a third of equivalent Barcelona packages.

Real immersion outside class

Paella Sundays, vermut at noon, and weekly intercambios at bars in Ruzafa give you reps that no textbook can.

Course types explained

Most schools mix and match these formats. Pick the one that matches your weekly budget of hours, not your wish list.

Intensive (20-30h per week)

You have a few months to push to B1 or B2.

Mornings in class, afternoons free for homework and immersion. Standard package for student visa applicants and serious learners.

Semi-intensive (10-15h per week)

You work or study part-time.

Two to three sessions per week, usually mornings or early evenings. Slower curve but easier to sustain for 6+ months.

DELE preparation

You need the certificate for residency or university.

Targets the four DELE skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) plus past papers. Usually 4 to 8 weeks before the exam date.

Business Spanish

You already work in Spanish but need polish.

Meeting language, email register, negotiation phrases. Often delivered as 1-on-1 or small group, invoiced to your company.

Conversation clubs

You have B1+ and want fluency.

Two-hour talk-only sessions, usually 3 to 8 students, one teacher. Cheap (12-18 EUR per session) and a great add-on to a main course.

Private 1-on-1

You want a custom plan or only have one hour a day.

Fastest progress per hour but most expensive. Typical rate 28-45 EUR per hour. Most schools offer packs of 10 or 20.

DELE certification explained

DELE stands for Diploma de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera. It is the only Spanish-language certificate awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and recognised worldwide. Six levels run from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery), aligned with the CEFR.

Why expats need it

  • Non-Lucrative Visa renewal often asks for A2 or B1 to show integration.
  • Spanish citizenship by residency requires A2 DELE (or the CCSE integration test plus DELE).
  • Most Spanish universities require B2 or C1 for undergraduate admission.
  • Some employers and notaries treat DELE B2 as a hiring or signing threshold.

Valencia exam dates and centres

The Instituto Cervantes coordinates DELE exams. In Valencia, the main public test centre is the Universidad de Valencia. Most schools listed above are also authorised test centres and run sittings in February, April, May, July, September, and November. Register at least 6 weeks before the exam date.

How to choose your school

These are the five filters that matter once you ignore the marketing photos.

  1. 1

    Instituto Cervantes accreditation

Confirms the school meets official quality standards. Required if you need a student visa.

  2. 2

Class size capped at 8 to 12

Above 12, speaking time per student collapses. Ask before paying.

  3. 3

    Schedule flexibility

Can you switch from intensive to semi-intensive without losing the package price? Most quality schools say yes.

  4. 4

    Location near your barrio

Commute kills attendance. Pick a school within 25 minutes door-to-door from where you sleep.

  5. 5

    Post-course practice

Look for intercambios, alumni WhatsApp groups, paid conversation clubs, or partnerships with local cafes.

Common questions about learning Spanish in Valencia

How long does it take to reach B2?

Roughly 6 to 9 months at 20 hours per week, plus daily practice outside class. From zero to B1 is faster, typically 4 to 5 months.

Can I get a student visa through these schools?

Yes. Cervantes-accredited schools issue the enrollment letter needed for a Spanish student visa, provided your course is at least 20 hours per week and runs longer than 90 days.

Will the school help with NIE and empadronamiento?

Most accredited schools point you to a partner gestoria or include a paperwork session in their long-term packages. Confirm in writing before paying.

Do they teach Valenciano too?

Almost no Spanish-as-foreign-language school teaches Valenciano. You can take separate Valenciano classes at the EOI (official language school) once you reach B1 Spanish.

When is the best month to start a course?

September and January have the biggest intakes and the most level options. Summer (June-August) is fine but skews younger and shorter.

What if I cannot commit to a full month?

Most schools sell weekly blocks. You can start any Monday and add weeks as you go, although the per-week price drops once you commit to 4+ weeks.
