Shipping Belongings to Spain
Many people we help over-pay on the move and under-plan the customs side. The container quote is the easy part - the expensive surprises live in import declarations, port-to-door trucking, and the four weeks between when your stuff leaves and when it actually arrives in your new flat in Ruzafa or Cabanyal. Here is what to budget, what to file, and what to keep with you.
Checklist before shipping your belongings to Spain
- Request at least 2-3 quotes from international movers - and check whether each one is the moving company itself or a broker.
- Prepare a clear inventory list in English and Spanish, with declared values per item; customs uses this verbatim.
- Confirm customs paperwork in advance: NIE, padrón certificate, passport copy, plus, if you arrive from outside the EU, the written application for the change-of-residence customs relief that goes in with the import declaration.
- Keep a 4-week 'arrival kit' with you (chargers, work laptop, prescriptions, two weeks of clothes) - sea freight to Valencia often takes longer than the quote suggests.
Shipping belongings to Spain: what it costs in 2026
Numbers below are typical 2026 ranges from Western Europe and the eastern US to Valencia, all-in (pickup, freight, customs clearance, delivery). They do not include packing materials (EUR 300-800), insurance (3-5% of declared value) or stair-charge surcharges if your Valencia flat has no lift - which is most of the historic centre.

Spain customs rules: no surprises at the border
The single most expensive mistake we see: shipping containers that arrive in Valencia before the new resident has their NIE and padrón in hand. Without those, the 'cambio de residencia' exemption can't be claimed and 21% IVA gets charged on the declared inventory. On a EUR 40,000 inventory that's EUR 8,400 in avoidable tax. Time the shipment to land 2-4 weeks after you do, not before.
Coming from inside the EU
No customs declaration. Free movement of goods - your van or container moves like any other inland shipment. The mover handles paperwork; your only job is the inventory.
Coming from outside the EU (UK, USA, Australia, etc.)
Spain applies the EU change-of-residence relief (Regulation 1186/2009) to your household goods. You must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, the goods must have been yours and in use for at least 6 months, and they must be imported within 12 months of establishing residence here.
Prove residence with NIE and padrón and file the inventory in Spanish with a written application to the customs office - there is no official form. Done correctly, you pay no import duty or VAT. Done late or with the wrong status, you can be charged 21% IVA on the declared value.
Restricted and prohibited items
Alcohol, tobacco, food, plants, firearms, ivory and certain wood furniture (CITES) all need separate paperwork or are simply not allowed. Pets ride in their own regime: rabies vaccination, EU pet passport or third-country health certificate, microchip. Don't pack them in the container - that one comes up more often than you'd think.
Choosing your Spain port of entry: why it matters
Where the ship docks can affect timing and cost as much as the quote itself. If you have a choice, route through Valencia direct - the local customs broker network knows expat 'cambio de residencia' files inside out and clearances are predictable.

Valencia (the usual port of entry)
Spain's busiest container port, with 5.66 million TEU handled in 2025. A strong logistics ecosystem, and clearance is quick when the paperwork is clean.
Algeciras / Barcelona (alternate)
Used when sailing from Asia, Latin America or West Africa. Adds a road transfer to Valencia and the trucking cost that goes with it, so ask your mover to price it into the quote.
Madrid (inland, air freight only)
If you're flying things in, air freight often lands at Madrid Barajas, Spain's main cargo airport, and finishes by road. That final leg is about 360 km (about 224 mi).
Shipping is only one line item in your move to Valencia
Container, deposits, flights, NIE costs, first month rent, certified translations, school registration: the real number is rarely just the mover's quote.
