Sala Carolina holds a couple of hundred people, which is small enough that the back wall sits only a few rows behind the sound desk. The tiered floor does the rest, so you are not spending the set looking at the back of somebody taller than you.
There is a second, smaller room used for quieter bills, and it makes the difference between an intimate night and a genuinely close-up one. Either way you are metres from the stage rather than watching a screen.
The crowd is local. Amistat sits in the Algiros district well away from the tourist centre, with a university campus close by, so you get residents and students rather than visitors. Nobody dresses up, and turning up in what you wore all day is the norm.
On a concert night, doors tend to open around an hour before the advertised time, the support act plays first, and the headliner rarely starts before ten in the evening. Comedy nights and family matinees run earlier and keep much closer to the printed time.
Tickets, and getting home from Amistat
Buy in advance. A room this size sells out quickly when the name on the poster is one people know, sometimes days ahead, and the taquilla only opens shortly before the doors. A ticket on your phone is accepted, so there is no need to print anything.
Getting there is simple: the Amistat-Casa de Salud metro stop on lines 5 and 7 is a short walk from Carrer de Rugat, and EMT buses and the tram also serve the area.
Getting back is the part to plan. Metrovalencia stops running well before the night is over on an ordinary weeknight and keeps going later on Friday and Saturday, so read the last departure posted at the station before the encore rather than after it.
If you miss it, EMT night buses radiate from the centre, taxis are easy to find on the main avenues, and Valenbisi runs around the clock with the first half hour of each ride included in a subscription. Walking back to the centre from Amistat takes a little over half an hour.
