El Palmar
Albufera-lagoon village famous for authentic paella valenciana
Living in El Palmar
El Palmar is the most distinctive Pobles del Sud barrio, sitting on a small island in the Albufera lagoon about 25 minutes south of central Valencia. With around 700 residents, the village is best known internationally as the home of authentic paella valenciana - several of Valencia's most respected paella restaurants are based here, and the Sunday lunch tradition draws visitors from across the region. Wooden albuferenc boats still tie up at the village wharves and lagoon sunset trips depart from the same docks.
Housing is small: a handful of traditional barraca-influenced single-family homes, a few older flats above the restaurants, and very occasional new builds. Transport into the city is via EMT bus 25, around 25 minutes to centre. The trade-off is unique character and lagoon access for limited stock, weekend visitor traffic, and minimal weekday services.
