Alicante wine day trip: Monastrell and the legendary Fondillon

A comfortable day trip south of Valencia takes you into DO Alicante, home to powerful, sun-soaked Monastrell reds and one of the world's great historic dessert wines: Fondillon, a non-fortified wine made from over-ripened Monastrell grapes and aged a minimum of 10 years in a solera system. It is a different, sunnier wine country than Utiel-Requena, and worth the drive at least once.
