Coves de Sant Josep day trip from Valencia: underground river boat tour

Eight hundred metres of underground river in a punted boat, then two hundred and fifty on foot through a dry gallery. Tickets are timed and the daily quota is limited, so this is the one trip in the series you should book before you set off.

Explore an underground river by boat, just an hour from Valencia

The Coves de Sant Josep, near La Vall d'Uixó in Castellón, offer a unique experience: exploring an underground river by boat.

The guided visit takes around 40 minutes and covers approximately 800 metres (about 2,625 ft) by boat and 250 metres (about 820 ft) on foot. Inside, the temperature stays close to 20°C (about 68°F) throughout the year, making it a great day trip from Valencia in any season.

What the visit to the Coves de Sant Josep involves

Book a timed slot before you travel

The operator sells dated, timed tickets online and states that daily tickets are limited and a visit cannot be guaranteed without one. Its own English wording is that it does not guarantee tickets will be available at the box office. A boat holds a maximum of fourteen people, and you are asked to arrive ten minutes before your slot; arriving late means losing the ticket, with no changes or refunds.

The operator records human presence here from around 17,000 years ago, with Magdalenian paintings and rock engravings at the entrance, and a Bronze Age ceramic urn excavated near the embarkation point in 2020. On the hill directly above sits the Poblat de Sant Josep, an Iberian settlement with over forty metres of drystone wall still standing, which can also be seen from the mirador for nothing.

Plan a half-day visit in La Vall d'Uixó

The paraje around the cave has a picnic and barbecue area, a playground and cafes, and the Cami de l'Aigua water trail runs from there into the town centre. The Serra d'Espada natural park starts on the doorstep. The town has no paid street parking and no low-emission zone, which is a change from the city.

Booking, opening hours and getting to La Vall d'Uixo

Book online, and treat that as the default rather than a precaution. The operator's own page says plainly that daily tickets are limited and that it cannot guarantee a visit without an advance ticket, and that the box office sells only for the same day. At the time of writing the published prices are 18 euros for adults, 12 for children aged three to twelve, free under three, and 14 on the reduced rate for over-65s, students and visitors with a disability.

Opening hours are the one thing you cannot look up. The operator does not publish them at all and instead asks visitors to telephone for current times, so phone ahead to confirm before you travel. The cave can also close at short notice when heavy rain raises the river, so check before you drive out. There is no station in La Vall d'Uixo and the nearest are eight kilometres away, which makes a car the practical option; parking at the cave is free, with a caravan area, and it is about a ten-minute walk from the car park to the entrance.

In practice, yes. Does the cave close in winter or for maintenance?
No annual closure period is published. What the operator does flag is that the walking section runs only when conditions allow, and the cave can close at short notice when heavy rain raises the level of the underground river. Since the visit is mostly seated in a boat at a constant 20C, winter is otherwise a perfectly good time to go.
Is it the longest underground river in Europe?
No official body makes that claim, and neither does the operator, which says one of the longest navigable underground rivers in Europe. The navigable section on the visit is 800 metres (about 2,625 ft), and cave divers have explored over three kilometres of the wider system.
Is the visit suitable for children or for wheelchair users?
There is no minimum age, but under-13s must be accompanied by an adult, and under-2s travel free on a lap. The operator publishes no wheelchair-accessibility statement, so anyone with specific needs, or bringing an assistance dog, is asked to email in advance. It advises against the visit for people with claustrophobia, agoraphobia or severe lung disease. Most of the trip is seated, and the dry gallery is paved but wet in places.
How do you get to La Vall d'Uixo from Valencia?
Driving is the easiest option. La Vall d'Uixo has no railway station, the nearest being around eight kilometres away at Nules, Xilxes or Moncofa, and the bus link from Valencia is line 113. The town is reached from the A-7 or the AP-7, which has been toll-free since 2020, parking at the cave is free, and there is no low-emission zone or paid street parking in the town.
