Beyond the city, in one day
Valencia sits close to a river gorge, a hilltop castle town and a walled medieval peninsula, none of them more than a couple of hours away. You do not need a car overnight or a hotel booking to see any of them properly.

Planning a day trip from Valencia
Driving is easiest
All three destinations are a straightforward drive from the city and none require a toll motorway the whole way. Leave before 9am in July and August to beat the coastal traffic toward Cullera and Peniscola.
Pick your season
Cullera and Peniscola are beach towns, so spring and autumn avoid both the summer crowds and the winter closures. Montanejos works any month, since the spring water stays at 25C year round.
Bring water shoes
The riverbed at Montanejos and the rocks around L'Assut de la Marquesa in Cullera are uneven. A pair of old trainers or water shoes makes both far more comfortable.
