Explore beyond Valencia on a day trip
From Valencia you can take a boat out on a rice-field lagoon, sit in a Roman theatre, float along an underground river and swim in a 25 °C thermal river. Further out are castle villages in the Castellón hills, a Mudéjar bell tower above the Palancia, a walled medieval town at 1,000 m, the walls of Albarracín climbing a ridge in Aragón and two seaside towns crowned by castles. You do not need a night away or a hotel booking to see any of them properly.

Planning a day trip from Valencia
Driving is easiest
None of these trips needs a toll road: the AP-7 along the coast has been toll-free since January 2020, and the inland routes run on the free A-23 and A-7. Leave before 9am in July and August to beat the coastal traffic toward Cullera and Peñíscola.
Pick your season
Cullera and Peñíscola are beach towns, so spring and autumn avoid both the summer crowds and the winter closures. Montanejos works any month, since the spring water stays at 25 °C year round.
Bring water shoes
The riverbed at Montanejos and the rocks around L'Assut de la Marquesa in Cullera are uneven. A pair of old trainers or water shoes makes both far more comfortable.
