Living in La Fonteta de Sant Lluís

La Fonteta de Sant Lluís () is a barrio of the Quatre Carreres district, in the south of Valencia. Its Valencian name is the official one; in Castilian it is Fuente de San Luis, and most people just call it La Fonteta. It is bounded by the Ronda Sud to the north, the Avinguda d'Ausiàs March to the west, the old Saler motorway to the east, and the Cercanías tracks and the new bed of the Turia to the south. Those roads keep it apart from the rest of the city, and the old village core still feels like the huerta village it was.

Fonteta means "little fountain" in Valencian, and Sant Lluís is Saint Louis Bertrand, the sixteenth-century Valencian Dominican. According to the tradition recorded by his eighteenth-century biographer, the friar fell ill in 1579, drank from a spring on the road from Russafa to the Albufera, felt better and blessed it. A hermitage was later built there in his memory; the hamlet that grew around it became a parish in 1902, when the church of Sant Lluís Bertran took its present form. The miracle is a pious tradition, not a documented event, but the fountain and the dedication are where the name comes from.

According to the Ajuntament's municipal register, 3,308 people lived in La Fonteta de Sant Lluís on 1 January 2025, on 23.9 hectares, almost the same as the 3,120 recorded in 1991. The old village around the church and its three small squares sits beside blocks built from the 1970s onwards. Many people also count neighbouring Na Rovella, north of the Ronda Sud, as part of La Fonteta, which is why the old basketball pavilion there carries its name.

Transport and trade-offs: there is no metro station in the barrio; the Quatre Carreres stop on tram-train line 10 is across the Ronda Sud, and EMT buses link it to the centre. The ring roads bring traffic noise and make walking anywhere a matter of crossing big junctions, and shops are few. Na Rovella lies to the north, and Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències to the north-east.
